This gender-reveal announcement was a real slam dunk.
A New Jersey couple decided to brighten up an NBA game Wednesday in Philadelphia by revealing the gender of their forthcoming child with the help of the 76ers mascot, Franklin, who dunked an illuminated basketball to tip off fans.
“Franklin has his basketball here — it’s going to light up blue or pink, and it will reveal the gender of your child,” a team announcer told the couple. “But we got to do it 76ers style — let’s go Franklin!”
Franklin, an oversized blue dog, then slammed home the light-up basketball, revealing the couple will welcome a baby girl in just a few months.
The in-game entertainment was quickly noticed on social media by basketball fans and sports reporters alike, with one person suggesting the event is a harbinger of bad things to come.
“A couple is doing a real baby gender reveal on court at the Sixers game between the first and second quarters,” one user named Steve Moore wrote on Twitter. “It’s been nice knowing you all. The apocalypse is coming.”
Kyle Neubeck, who covers the Sixers for PhillyVoice.com, echoed that take, saying he was left confused by the unorthodox gender reveal.
“The Sixers just did a gender reveal for a couple between quarters and it was one of the strangest things I’ve ever seen at a basketball game,” Neubeck tweeted.
The couple, Bradley and Kimberly Hayes, met through a mutual friend in 2012 before getting married three years later. The baby girl, who is expected to arrive May 30, is their first child, WPVI reports.
